Koh Phi Phi, A great base to explore other islands and beaches, or simply stay put and relax.

The Phi Phi Islands are located some 40 km Southwest of Krabi and approximately 50 km Southeast of Phuket and consist of two picturesque islands – Phi Phi Leh and Phi Phi Don. As with Koh Lanta, Phi Phi Islands are within the boundaries of Krabi Province.

The popular Phi Phi Islands consists of 2 separate islands famed for their spectacular landscapes, beautiful beaches and spectacular island reefs teeming with variety of coral fishes. Ideal place to enjoy scuba diving. Its paradise-like appearance can best be seen in the movie, The Beach , where most of the filming occurred. Koh Lanta Yai is a predominantly Muslim fishing island where many resorts have recently sprouted up. The island is covered with forested hills sweeping down to numerous sandy bays on the western side. A good alternative for those seeking peace and quiet.

Accommodation can only be found on the larger Phi Phi Don. The islands have long been famed as some of the most beautiful tropical islands of the world, for they are surrounded by extremely clear water. The islands have largely retained their natural beauty, thanks to careful protection from National Park personnel. They have for two decades or more been a popular destination for daytrip tourists and overnighters who flock to the island on large cruise boats each day. The clear, azure turquoise waters became a major attraction for divers and snorkeling enthusiasts, and have long been declared some of the world’s best dive grounds, often compared favourably with the Red Sea and the Maldives.

A large variety of corals and beautiful reefs make diving or snorkeling a must. The leopard shark and blacktip shark call the waters off the islands their home, while catches of Blue Marlins are occasionally reported. While the island’s ‘capital’, Tonsai has been developed into a highly commercial village with countless tourist businesses, the rest of the island still represents what many tourists consider a true ‘Paradise’. Particularly, Laem Thong Beach in the Northeast, where only a handful resorts are available. There are no roads on the island, only natural footpaths or often badly paved walkways in the Tonsai area.

Therefore, getting around on the island is on foot – or by hiring some of the water taxis that come in the form of longtail boats or speedboats. The height of popularity was reached with the movie 'The Beach' that starred heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio. It is needless to say that every tourist nowadays is drawn to Maya Bay – the ‘Paradise location’ where the movie was shot. Now, Singapore-based Star Cruises have included Phi Phi in their itinerary.
